The Basilica Cistern, built in the 4th century, is one of the magnificent antique buildings of Istanbul and is located in the southwest of Hagia Sophia. It is called the Basilica Cistern because it was a basilica, not a cistern. Two Medusa heads used as supports under the two columns at the northwest end of the Cistern are known to be important artefacts from the Roman period. What attracts the most attention of visitors is the fact that the structure where the heads of Medusa have been taken is unknown. This jewel has been the subject of several Hollywood films such as James Bond: From Russia with Love and Dan Brown's Inferno.

The Basilica Cistern can be visited every day from 09:00 to 18:30.

-After purchasing the ticket, all you have to do is show the QR code sent to you to the staff.

- The railing levels inside the cistern are low, leaning on the railings is dangerous and prohibited.

- Cistern management has the right to decline entrance to visitors if found inappropriate.

- Tickets are non-refundable and must be used only once and on the day of purchase.

- Food and drinks are not allowed into the cistern.

- Smoking, including electronic cigarettes is forbidden inside the cistern.

- Pets are not allowed.

- Cistern humidity level is 96%.

- There may be ceiling condensation because of the high humidity level. Please be aware of your electronic devices as water damage is a possibility.

- Be cautious as the floor is wet and it can be dark inside the cistern.

-  High heels are not appropriate for the entrance-exit stairs and the walking platform.

- Please hold on to the railings as you enter and exit through the stairs.

-  It is dangerous and forbidden to lean on the railings as they are low in height.
